NGL Best Practice 9

Community Develops a Career Academy Marketing Plan to Build Awareness and Support Among Parents, Students, Business, and within the Education Community and Gathers Data to Support This Plan

What to do
Use a well-developed marketing plan to help build a culture of support around a growing network of career academies.

Why it’s important
A good marketing plan builds student/parent demand, business support and advocacy, and educator participation in the NGL.
Most educators, especially academic teachers, are unaccustomed to marketing their programs to students, their parents, and the community. Career academies are voluntary programs and need publicity for recruitment and resources. Business partners can play a huge role in organizing this campaign if mobilized. Data collection establishes a track record that is crucial to promoting success.

Signs that you’re on the right track
• Data collection is ongoing and is acknowledged as the foundation for the campaign.
• Academy presentations are provided to community groups such as Rotary, Chamber, and leadership organizations such as school boards and education commissions.
• Academy student recruitment strives to include all interested students, regardless of student achievement level or economic circumstance.
• Students/parents are reached through media and school outreach year round with particular emphasis during the period when students are signing up for academies.
• Every success—be it personal student achievement, collective academy achievement, or business involvement—is promoted.
